Best Episode Ever
What is "Air Miles And Bigger Smiles"? It's some of the best riders in the mountain bike world banding together in Kamloops - a city within canyons, cliff faces, huge booters, and GAPS...
This is by far my favorite episode from all 3 seasons. When we woke up in the parking lot of the rec center the next morning at 6:30 am we had only slept a few hours. It was sunny for once and we were going to "get 'er goin" as Tyler would say. Before we even got ready Matt Hunter smelled that there was fellow freeriders in his town and came looking for us on his dirt bike. He was down for whatever and ran home to get his gear. We had planned to be in Kamloops for only a few days but the Kelowna boys (Steve & Ryan) insisted that we 'pin it' for half that amount of time and get to Kelowna for a couple days to ride the new Gillard mountain - re built since the fires destroyed all the trails in 2003.
When you try and squeeze in as many big moves in one day as we were planning to we all knew that there was going to be some crashes, and there was.
Warm up - The helmet cam "snake trail" from Hunter's section in The Collective.
Next - Hunter's man made secret booters - launching the riders huge!
Next - The Canyon gap - 50 feet edge to edge. Last - Steve's massive step down road gap - also seen in the Collective. That's the first 6 minutes of the episode.Since the boys got all the big moves they wanted out of their system in one day there was nothing else to do but to pull out to explore Kelowna's new trail system since being completely destroyed by fire only weeks after the Kelowna episode of season 2 was filmed. The dedication of the local trail builders is evident when you see that all of what Kelowna had to be proud of just got better. The fires seemed to just provoke the riders and builders in that town and even before the smoke had cleared hammers were swinging which is why we had the chance to film more amazing trail segments there again only a year later. See a little smacktalk go down between the Nelsonite (Kinrade) and the K-Towners. Kinrade jumps right back in the saddle after a huge wipeout in Kamloops the day before which bent his front wheel 90 degrees, he adds his own flare to the Kelowna trails before going back home. Of course as you Faithful Drop In viewers are all aware there is one big reason to go back to Kelowna. A certain stunt that draws only the most skilled riders from all over, something that the fires never took away and will remain (until they build more houses there) - The Gillard mountain road gap.
