Eric Peterson is a 16-year-old from Saltspring Island, a small island just off the coast of BC. He’s been riding bikes for years, and has recently branched into the film and production side of the industry. Check this out for a little more about this up-and-comer, and to check out some of his work!

Age:
16

Hometown:
Saltspring Island B.C (a small island between Vancouver and Victoria)

Setup:
(Bike) Trek Session 10, Boxxers, Revox, Deemax, Code (Camera) Soon to be Canon HV30

So you live in a pretty small town, with not a whole lot for mountain biking. Where do you go to ride?

Yeah, there is nothing really on Saltspring for mountain biking, aside from the few things that we have built. It’s a small island so their aren’t many places to build and anywhere we build the seniors come out and bitch at us. We mostly go over to Vancouver Island and ride the dh trails like Mt.Prevost (that’s in the new Seasons movie), or places like Hammerfest or Roller Coaster in Nanaimo. One of our favorite places is Roberts Creek near Sechelt, awsome trails up there.

Is there a big mtb community in Saltspring?

Not at all, there are a few BMXer’s that used to mtb but we are the only ones here who have stuck with it.
Fault Line Media Group

Tell me about your project, Fault Line Media Group.

Fault Line Media Group is going to be our “company” name for the next while. We chose Media because we also have Rob and Braden that do the pictures thing, it’s not just film, and that way we can have all our media in one spot under one name. We then added Group of course because it’s not just one person, it’s a bunch of people interested in the film and photo side of action sports - I’m not the only one behind the camera or in front of the computer screen editing. The plan is to work on a few shorts, and next fall put out a full lenth film of our trips around BC. The other thing that I am personally interested in is making a series where we choose one (young/new) rider per episode and basically make a teaser of them and as well include a few pictures of them from Rob and/or Braden. The idea being to get their name out, as well as ours…as new riders and cine/photographers.

Now that you’ve started filming and producing, what have you learned about the industry?

One of the things I’ve learned is that everyone has different opinions about your work, some like your stuff and others don’t. Before I started doing this I thought that if it was good, everyone would like it, and if it wasn’t good, nobody would like it. Now I’ve realized, let’s say one of your close buddies doesn’t like it, there’s always someone else that does and you shouldn’t get discouraged by those people that don’t like it. I now try to make my videos for the people that like them and steer away from trying to impress the people that didn’t like the other ones. Also keeping my own style instead of changing it to get those others to like them more.

What kind of resources are there for small-time or beginning producers like FLMG?

There is a good amount of resources. There are a lot of places where you can upload your videos, have profiles and be noticed so the scene for new guys is pretty good. So far ,RipTv has been the top of my list for these things, there is lots of exposure through Rip.

Do you plan on pursuing this as a career or is it just a hobby?

I’m not too sure at the moment, but probably as a career, or at least for a few years after school.

A few months ago, you won the Rip Banger Hunt contest, and scored $500 cash. Be honest…did you spend it on a bike like you said you would or did you blow it all?

Haha, no I actually put it into my session frame. It was tempting, but I needed a bike badly, kinda like how I need a camera now.
Complete these sentences:

My favorite pro rider is…
Cedric Gracia or Fabien Barel

The best mtb movie ever is…
anything by The Collective. It may not show in my movies, but my friends know I’m Collective at heart.

My best Drop In season was…
Season 3, just because they went to Mt.Prevost and all up Vancouver Island.

Downhill, dirt jumps or street…
Not even a question, Downhill for sure.

If I could go anywhere in the world to ride I would go…
to Squamish. It’s really close I know, but the place is just great for mtb. There are trails everywhere and it’s on the North Shore, so what more can I ask for? If I could film anywhere, I’d so choose Hood River where “Have You Seen It” was filmed, so epic!
