Win Jossi Wells’ Skis!

POSTED: Monday, April 14th, 2008

Atomic is giving you the chance to win Jossi Wells’ skis - and not just his skis, but the skis he used at the X-Games this year (signed by JW himself). All you gotta do is show Atomic what you can do with a pair of their skis (whatever that means)… my guess is they’re looking for funny photography or artwork that has something to do with Atomics. Just send your entry (and contact info) into atomicfreeskiing@gmail.com before May 15, and the shred sticks could be yours!

Ryan Decenzo Interview

POSTED: Monday, April 14th, 2008

Ryan Decenzo is one of the most-heard names in skateboarding these days, and with good reason. Why, you ask? Well, maybe it’s his slew of podium finishes at numerous contests in the last year - 1st place DC Nationals, 1st Place Tampa Am, 3rd Place Globe Slaughter at the Opera, to name a few. Maybe it’s because he’s one of a set of hella talented brothers - little bro Scott “Scooter” is killing it as well. Or maybe it’s because despite all the hype, he’s one of the most down-to-earth guys around - staying true to his roots and refusing to get caught up in the scene. I grew up in Delta, a suburb of Vancouver, and went to the same elementary and high schools as Ryan. Nine times out of ten, on any given day, you could find him and Scooter in their parents’ driveway, skating their mini ramp. Now, years later, the Decenzo boys still manage meet up once every couple weeks to shred.

Best memory of 2007?

Skating Vancouver in summer-time. And then going to Barcelona with all my homies!

This last year’s been crazy for you, with tons of contests, travel and lots of industry attention. How often do you get to come home and skate with your boys in Van?

I haven’t been in Van for a while i get to come home maybe one time every 3 months or so.

Your little bro Scott has been killing it too, making it onto Plan B as their only Am. Do you guys ever get to skate together anymore?

Yeah, we were skating together at Pheonix am contest a couple days ago and we usually meet up in LA or Sandiego to go skate street! I see him at least every two weeks but usually much more when we’re street skating together.

Were you guys super competitive growing up?

When we were really young and we could only do like 5 or 6 tricks then yeah, we were competive. But then we started learning our own tricks and then learning each others tricks, so it was really great, we just skated and got along.

Is it harder to get exposure, being from Canada?

Ya. I think it is for sure.

What was the best part of growing up here?

The fresh air, having fun in the snow when i was young. Good place to grow up!

Who’s inspired you the most as a skater?

Mark Appleyard, Machnau, Haslam… All those dudes are killing it for Canada and thats sick!

You’ve been staying with Adam Dyet in Cali quite a bit. Have you thought about making the move down there or do you still call Vancouver home?

I travel so much right now, nowhere is really home. But I’d have to get a green card before i could move to Cali.

You just killed it in the Globe Slaughter at the Opera - throwing down some huge lines in front of guys like Appleyard and Koston. Did you think you would end up top 3 going into the contest?

HAHA. No totally not!

Next trick you wanna learn?

Impossible lipslides.

One of your Delta homies told me you dirtbike on ice… wtf?!

Yeah, it’s really fun! It’s like flat track style on a frozen lake in Kamloops. No jumps or anything but there are metal studs in the tires.

Goals for 2008?

Just Skate as much as i can, and keep my body healthy as i can.

Any last words?

Thanks to everybody who supported my skateboarding!
