TWS Riders’ Poll Awards: Nominees and Predictions

POSTED: Monday, December 31st, 2007

The biggest night in snowboarding is coming back to Las Vegas! The 9th Annual Transworld SNOWboarding Riders’ Poll Awards, presented by GORE-TEX®, will be held at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Thursday, January 31 during the SIA trade show. This invite-only event brings out top snowboarding pros to cheer on their own picks for the top spots in the sport. With an after-party sponsored by Sessions, this should be a night to remember. The nominees are:
Men’s Rookie Of The Year
Torstein Horgmo
Kevin Pearce
Austin Smith
Prediction: Torstein all the way. He placed top 5 in pretty much every event this year, and he’s hella young.
Horgo Torstein
Women’s Rookie Of The Year
Kimmy Fasani
Desiree Melancon
Spencer O’Brien
Desiree for sure. If you’ve ever seen her stomp a rail, you’ll know why. Plus she made a solid appearance in Runway Film’s La La Land - not bad for a rookie.
Desiree Melancon
Men’s Rider Of The Year
Nicolas Müller
Wolle Nyvelt
Andreas Wiig
Prediction: Andreas Wiig. We all know the X-Games dominate the industry, and well - he won the gold. So…
Andreas Wiig
Women’s Rider Of The Year
Hana Beaman
Torah Bright
Marie-France Roy
Prediction: Marie-France Roy. She’s been called “up-and-comer” for way too long - with a couple big contracts and a good contest showing this year, it’s time for her to arrive on the scene.
Marie-France Roy
Women’s Video Part Of The Year
Annie Boulanger - Absinthe/Optimistic?
Marie-France Roy - Rome/Any Means
Cheryl Maas - Yeahh/Purple Yeahh
Prediction: Marie-France Roy showed the boys some shit in Any Means - she’s more than just “good for a girl”, she’s freakin GOOD.
Men’s Video Part Of The Year
John Jackson - Standard/Catch The Vapors
Wolle Nyvelt - Absinthe/Optimistic?
Austin Smith - MDP/We’re People Too
Prediction: Austin Smith - mostly because I think he’ll get shafted for Rookie of the Year, and he sure as hell deserves some recognition for his debut!
Standout Of The Year
Terje Haakonsen’s Record Breaking Air
Torstein Horgmo, Eddie Wall, Jonas Carlson, and Ken Block, DC Snow Park Session
Andreas Wiig X-Games Gold
Prediction: This is a tough one. I’m gonna guess Haakonsen because it got the most press.
Terje Haakonsen
Readers’ Choice
Men’s and Women’s Winners TBA

We’ll see if I know what the hell I’m talking about after we get the results next month!

“Inspired” Action Figures

POSTED: Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Forget Buddy Jesus…meet Extreme Jesus.
extreme Jesus
Complete with jeans, leather boots and a “blingin” crown of thorns, he doesn’t just ride motorcycles, he surfs, skateboards and even bullrides. Created by Eric Dyson, he is available through most Christian retailers. And, apparently, inspired by God himself.
Dyson says God led him to a vision: “Jesus the Christ on a motorcycle riding across the open roads of America.”
In other bizzare news, one former BMXer is pushing to revive a trend that first emerged in the 70s: swing biking.
original swing bike
You’re probably wondering what the hell that is. Well so did I, so I searched for it on the go-to site for useless shit (youtube) and got some interesting results. (with probably the worst soundtrack ever)
I’m not really sure what the point of it is, besides pissing off everyone else on the road, but former BMXer Ryan Beers seems to think it’s pretty sick.
I hate to rain on his parade, but somehow I don’t see the whole swing bike thing making a comeback anytime soon. Riding in a circle on a freaky hinged bike just doesn’t have the same appeal as killing it on a BMX.
Hope you all found something better than a Bullriding Jesus under your tree this year…
